The first question i want to answer about addiciton is: What is Addiction?
Addiction is a chronic disorder which gives you a strong physical and psychological need or urge for something that is completely out of your control. It goes hand in hand with obesessive compulsive disorder, becuase the addict has a compulsion to something, which then leads to an obsession.
How does someone become an addict?
There are many reasons why a person becomes an addict, and there are a lot of factors involved.
Firstly addiction has a lot to do with brain chemistry, our brains are wired to reward us when we do something that feels good, but also, other behaviours that are linked to our survival trigger releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine makes you feel good, and on top of that keeps wanting you to keep doing that same thing, and it teaches our brain how to repeat the behaviour. If i was to mention drugs for instance, they trigger the same part of the brain, it's like a reward system in the brain, when a person uses a substance dopamine get's released, it tells your brain that it is a behaviour that should be remembered and repeated.
We know that not everyone can become an addict, but if you are already at risk due to external factors, then it is more likely you wil become an addict. There have been brain imaging studies which have shown brain behaviours change with addiction, such as: judgment, decision, making, memory, learning, and behaviour control. Of course addictin is not just about drugs, but you can become addicted to many things. Alcohol, excercise, work, sex, gaming, the list goes on and on.
What are the the risk factors for a person to become an addict?
The first thing is genetics, if a family member is an addict, then you are at higher risk of becoming one.
Some mental health disorders like depression can make you a higher risk of becoming an addict.
Your environment, if you have experienced trauma in your life, again this can trigger adiction.
For those that do suffer with addictions, it is extremely hard to get away from it, and for most clients i see and treat for addicition it is a way out of a life they are experencing, or have experienced.
For anyone coming in to me for addiction therapy you have to be 100% sure that you are ready to make the changes, you can't stop half way through thinking that you are fine, becuase many times those that do come back.
